Frankfurt

One of our city’s most important goals is to bring people together and provide a platform for them to share their experiences. Demonstrated by the countless best-practice and knowledge transfers which take place as part of delegation visits and international business conferences. These links promote exchanges in the sciences, economics, and beyond.

Frankfurt is Europe’s continental financial centre and European traffic hub. Frankfurt hosts the DE-CIX digital hub, meaning that it will continue to be at the centre of global data traffic in the future. Close links to research and educational institutions guarantee a steady supply of highly-qualified young talent. The city generates a quarter of the State of Hesse’s gross domestic product thanks to the unique qualities it offers to companies of all sizes

Its central geographical location within the Federal Republic of Germany and Europe makes Frankfurt an excellent traffic nexus. Home to one of Europe’s largest airports with 70 million passengers annually, one of the world’s largest railway stations, the Frankfurt motorway junction and the river Main as a major European waterway, the city is a transport hub and gateway to the world.

The numerous European institutions such as the European Central Bank (ECB) and the Authority for Anti-Money Laundering and Countering the Financing of Terrorism (AMLA) as well as international companies based here ensure that Frankfurt remains a fascinating, cosmopolitan, and tolerant city. Frankfurt is one of the four capitals of the EU. However, in its more than 1200-year history, the trading metropolis on the Main has always been firmly anchored in European structures. The Deutsche Bundesbank, ECB, and Deutsche Börse as well as offices of many foreign central banks make the city the most important financial centre in continental Europe. This financial powerhouse is supported by the city’s outstanding infrastructure and unique geographical location

Art lovers like Frankfurt. It has one of the most significant collections of museums in Europe in the shape of the Museumsufer on the south bank of the river Main. But Frankfurt is also home to major publishing houses, the Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels publishing trade organisation and the influential Frankfurt Book Fair. Music lovers also find plenty to tempt them in the Main metropolis: the Ensemble Modern is based in Frankfurt; the award-winning opera house regularly hosts unique productions and the Alte Oper offers outstanding concert series. The city’s outstanding theatres, including the internationally renowned Schauspiel, the Künstler*innenhaus Mousonturm (one of the first independent production venues in Germany), the English Theatre, 60 independent theatres, and numerous international film festivals are key factors which define the city’s cultural identity.

Ageing is routinely portrayed as a difficult, dreary time of life, beset by restrictions and struggles - if it is acknowledged at all. With Germany's population of over-60s set to grow significantly in the coming decades, finding new ways to overturn this negative image and reduce the country's healthcare burden is vital.
