On 26 March 2025, the third Eurocities Cities’ Social Summit will convene in Brussels, bringing together city leaders, EU policymakers, and key stakeholders to discuss the crucial role of cities in advancing the European Social Model.
The event aims to build upon the successes of the Eurocities’ ‘Inclusive Cities for All’ campaign, which has seen over 61 cities across Europe make concrete commitments to improve social rights for millions of citizens.
What is the event about
The Summit will focus on assessing the impact of these city pledges, which encompass a wide range of initiatives aimed at addressing social challenges such as poverty, homelessness, and social exclusion. Presentations and discussions will highlight the tangible benefits these local actions will bring to citizens’ lives, demonstrating the vital role of cities in translating the principles of the European Pillar of Social Rights (EPSR) into concrete realities.
The Summit will feature a series of panel discussions and interactive sessions on critical topics, including:
- Localising the European Social Model: Exploring how cities can effectively implement the EPSR principles and achieve tangible improvements in citizens’ lives.
- Ensuring access to essential services: Addressing the challenges of providing affordable and accessible healthcare, education, and social services to all residents.
- Combating child poverty: Discussing the importance of the Child Guarantee and exploring innovative local approaches to addressing child poverty.
A key highlight of the event will be the presentation of a Eurocities policy paper outlining recommendations for the upcoming Action Plan on the Implementation of the EPSR. This paper will emphasise the need to:
- Adapt the EPSR to reflect current socio-economic realities: Acknowledging the impact of the rising cost of living and the challenges posed by the twin green and digital transitions.
- Strengthen the urban dimension within the Action Plan: Recognising the unique challenges and opportunities faced by cities in addressing social issues.
- Enhance collaboration between cities and all levels of government: Fostering a more integrated approach to social policy development and implementation.
The Eurocities Cities’ Social Summit will serve as a valuable platform for dialogue and action. By highlighting the achievements of cities and outlining a roadmap for future collaboration, the event will underscore the critical role of urban areas in shaping a more just and equitable future for all Europeans.
