In this publication, you will find insights from the Food Trails Final Conference, held in Brussels on 3 October 2024. The event celebrated the achievements of the Food Trails project. Coordinated by the City of Milan, the project brought together 11 European cities to develop urban food policies, Living Labs, and pilot actions aimed at creating sustainable food systems.
Key outcomes include:
- 31 pilot actions addressing public food services, urban agriculture, food waste prevention, and more.
- Peer learning and cascade learning programmes engaging over 37 cities and fostering replication of best practices.
- Eight innovative tools, detailed in the Food Trails Handbook, supported cities in policymaking and impact measurement.
The conference underscored the critical role of cities in shaping food systems aligned with EU Food 2030 priorities. Insights and tools from the project remain accessible for cities, inspiring continued innovation and collaboration.

Food Trails is an EU Horizon 2020 project involving 11 cities, 3 universities, and 5 food organizations. Its goal is to promote more resilient, safe, fair, and diverse urban food systems through co-designed actions in Food 2030-led Living Labs, enabling the development of systemic urban food policies.
