Silent nights, bright cities: from Vilnius to Barcelona

24 December 2025

Across Europe, winter whispers its charm, streets shimmer under gentle lights, markets hum with laughter, and the air carries the promise of shared moments. In Vilnius, this year’s European Capital of Christmas, creativity and sustainability meet in a celebration that warms the season and the soul.

The spotlight will soon turn to Barcelona, another Eurocities member, which will take the stage as the next European Capital of Christmas. Known for its rich cultural heritage and innovative approach to sustainability, Barcelona’s festive season blends tradition with creativity – from iconic fairs and parades to eco-friendly initiatives that make celebrations greener.

Other winners include Wels (Austria) and Kirkop (Malta), with a special mention for Valduvieco (Spain), all recognised for their efforts to foster community spirit and preserve traditions.

The awards were announced during the International Congress of European Christmas Cities and Festivals in Waterford, Ireland, under the theme ‘Bright and Green Christmases in European Cities, Building a Sustainable Future’. The official ceremony took place on 13 December in Vilnius, closing a year of celebrations and opening the door to Barcelona’s turn in the spotlight.

From all of us at Eurocities, we wish you a joyful, sustainable and community-driven Winter season.
