Pawel Adamowicz, the mayor of Gdansk, has died after he was attacked on stage during a national charity event on Sunday evening. Aged 53, he was Poland’s longest serving mayor, having held the post since 1998.
He was well known within the EUROCITIES network for his openness and commitment to public service. At the height of the refugee crisis, he stood up for people’s rights, and showed his colours time and again through support of other causes, such as LGBT rights.
Speaking from Stockholm, Anna Koenig Jerlmyr, president of EUROCITIES, said:
“We are all heartbroken. There just aren’t any words to express our sorrow. The thoughts of our entire network are with his family and constituents at this time. We will miss him as a colleague and as a friend.”
