Baia Mare

Baia Mare Municipality, the administrative center of Maramureș County, is an important urban hub located in northwestern Romania, approximately 60 km from the border with Ukraine. With a population of 136,135 inhabitants, Baia Mare is classified as a first-rank municipality and plays a significant role in the national urban network, both economically and socially, as well as culturally.

The city has a rich history, being first documented in the 14th century and historically known for its mining activities, particularly gold extraction. This industrial heritage has deeply influenced the city’s economic development and architecture. Following the closure of most mining operations, Baia Mare has reinvented itself as an emerging center for services, light industry, commerce, and tourism.

Today, Baia Mare benefits from well-developed educational and healthcare infrastructure, hosting four universities and three modern public hospitals. The city stands out for its cultural diversity, with an active artistic community, as well as festivals and events that attract visitors from across the country.

The regional importance of the municipality is reinforced by its strategic position at the intersection of major transport routes, and its proximity to the border provides significant potential for developing cross-border economic relations. Internationally, Baia Mare is engaged in European and global cooperation projects, with 13 partnerships established with cities in Ukraine, Hungary, Austria, the United States, Poland, Italy, and France. These partnerships support sustainable development, intercultural dialogue, and social inclusion.
