Chisinau

Chisinau Municipality, the capital and largest city in Moldova, serves as the country’s political, economic, and cultural hub. Strategically positioned in the heart of Eastern Europe, it is a key player in the region’s economic and geopolitical landscape.

Renowned for its blend of Soviet-era and modern European architecture, Chisinau is a melting pot of cultures, reflecting influences from Slavic, Western, and Asian cultures. The city, with its vibrant cultural scene, historic landmarks, and bustling commercial activities, plays a crucial role in shaping Moldova’s identity and its connections with neighboring countries.

Chisinau offers a variety of cultural and historical touristic sights. Among these are the Triumphal Arch, a symbol of victory and heritage, and the beautifully restored Nativity Cathedral, reflecting the city’s religious and architectural history.

It is also home to the vast Milestii Mici wine cellar, holding the world’s largest wine collection. Next to the central square, is located the serene Stefan cel Mare Central Park, a perfect spot for relaxation amidst greenery. Adjacent to it is the Theatre of Opera and Ballet, named after Maria Biesu.

Maria Biesu was a renowned Moldovan opera singer, famous for her exceptional soprano voice. Her career in Japan was a significant highlight, where she was highly appreciated for her unique interpretation of classic opera roles. She was honoured with the prestigious “Coco Chan” award, a significant recognition in the world of opera and classical music. Biesu’s performances in Japan not only showcased her vocal prowess but also helped build a cultural bridge between Moldova and Japan, fostering mutual appreciation and understanding of the arts.

Against the backdrop of rich and diverse culture, Chisinau Municipality is rapidly transitioning towards becoming a sustainable, eco-friendly, and inclusive city.

The year 2024 has been declared as the year of accessibility, with greater attention being given to the people with special needs. Over the last four years, Chisinau Municipality has opened 67 municipal facilities for people with special needs, aiming to foster their inclusion in society.

Chisinau Municipality is also active on the international arena. It is a member of the Global Parliament of Mayors (GPM), United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG), The Global Network of Major Cities and Metropolitan Spaces (Metropolis), the Covenant of Mayors – European Union and others.
