The Cities Social Summit – An opportunity to listen locally

2 October 2023

Where: Lyon

When: 10 November

The Cities’ Social Summit brings together mayors and deputy mayors from Europe to reaffirm their commitment to the EU’s social targets for 2030 and the European Pillar of Social Rights.

Lyon Métropole hosts the 2nd Eurocities Cities’ Social Summit. The event becomes an opportunity for urban leaders to dialogue with high-level EU and national representatives on how to join forces to identify and amplify key policy messages for the new European Commission’s social agenda (2024 – 2029).

Cities play a crucial role in bringing the citizens’ concerns to EU policymakers, so their voices can be heard before the European Parliament’s next elections. The summit will set the base to shape the EU agenda for the coming months, and highlight the topics that must be at the heart of the future of social Europe.

One of the main challenges cities face is ensuring the right to housing. A strong focus will be put on implementing the Lisbon Declaration and the objective to end homelessness by 2030, to which Eurocities is a signatory. On this occasion, Eurocities will launch its new report on ‘Combating youth homelessness in cities’ with evidence of how this phenomenon has evolved and includes good practices from municipalities all over Europe.

Like on many topics, cities have the will to do more on the right to housing, but this is only possible with adequate funding. The second panel will focus on social priorities in cohesion policy and European Social Fund +.

This event hosts high-level political sessions organised as part of Eurocities’ Social Affairs Forum (8-10 November), whose general programme focuses on technical discussions on working with vulnerable groups to mitigate the effects of crises.
