Entrepreneurship and SMEs

  • economy

This working group will focus on supporting business creation and development and skills development in cities, supporting our objective of long-term economic development

Cities are the engines of growth in Europe. They will also be the engines of recovery. Entrepreneurship flourishes in cities, where the majority of SMEs are created and grow. City authorities, in partnership with local organisations, are well-placed to define the most appropriate strategies to create a favourable environment for the development of entrepreneurship and creation of new jobs. Cities offer not only the business opportunities but also the combination of services, support and infrastructure that entrepreneurs need.

The main working group objectives are:
  • promote the exchange of ideas, knowledge and good practices between cities, including its local ecosystems and communities
  • act as lobbying structure aiming to support SME and entrepreneurs' activities in European urban centers

The themes to be discussed in 2017 are:
  • Measuring the success of local support schemes
    KPI (key performance indicators): what indicators of performance for local entrepreneurial ecosystems? How to define success? Do survival rates of new companies reflect success?

  • New economic sectors
    - Silver economy;
    - Sharing economy and circular economy (theme of Eurocities´annual conference in 2017)

  • City services to SME
    Access to finance and to markets for SMEs: which city services have already been implemented and which ones must be developed?
