EUROCITIES 2014 Munich: Simon Anholt confirmed as keynote

We are looking forward to welcoming Professor Simon Anholt, the world's leading authority on national and city image, as keynote speaker at EUROCITIES 2014 Munich on 5-8 November. Simon launched the Good Country Index in June this year, and at our conference he will be talking for the first time about the 'good city': what does it mean, and how can a city become 'good'?

Cities Today: mayor of Vienna & Anna Lisa Boni

Michael Häupl, mayor of Vienna, is featured in the latest edition of Cities Today magazine on how best to make an urban agenda work at EU level. He describes how an EU urban agenda that works for cities can and is taking shape. Our new secretary general, Anna Lisa Boni, is also featured in the magazine describing how she intends to position EUROCITIES as the 'go to' network for urban issues in Europe.

Cities in action: heating Budapest's zoo & garden

Budapest is making the most of its natural resources - 100 thermal springs and a well - to heat its zoo and botanical garden. Using a heat transfer system, the city is able to transfer waste heat from one of its thermal baths to the zoo and garden. By doing so, the zoo and garden is saving some €130,000 a year on its natural gas bill.

President Barroso meets local and regional networks

Representatives from EU local and regional networks met European Commission president José Manuel Barroso on 18 September to discuss the cooperation established under the two Barroso mandates, and consider how this could work in future. The meeting was part of an annual 'structured dialogue' to improve relations between the EU and local and regional authorities.

Barcelona wins Mayors Challenge

EUROCITIES member Barcelona won the grand prize of €5 million at the 2014 Mayors Challenge, an initiative of the former mayor of New York City, Michael Bloomberg. Barcelona was recognised for its project building collaborative support networks for elderly residents. The runners up include EUROCITIES members Athens, Stockholm and Warsaw, as well as Kirklees metropolitan area in the UK.
