An Energy Union to unlock city potential

The Energy Union Package, presented by the European Commission on 25 February, should enable cities to contribute to its goal of creating a resilient energy system and an ambitious climate policy for 'secure, sustainable and affordable energy'. In our response to the package, we make a number of recommendations, such as better integrating EU and member state policies on energy and climate.

Tackling long term unemployment at local level must be a priority

We showcase cities' efforts in tackling long term unemployment and highlight some common trends in our response to the European Commission's public consultation on long term unemployment. We draw attention to cities' capacity to design effective tailored measures and integrated services that support those most in need and furthest from the labour market, and call for greater involvement, recognition and resources for cities to help tackle this challenge.

Cities play important role in receiving & integrating asylum seekers

In our statement on asylum in cities, we call for a comprehensive EU migration policy that recognises the challenges faced by cities and local level solutions. We recommend measures for improving the integration of aslyum seekers and refugees at local level, and stress the need to share responsibility and solidarity across Europe. We also call for adequate EU and national funded to support the services cities provide to asylum seekers.

Talking urban mobility with Commissioner Bulc

Milan Obradovic, vice mayor of Malmo and chair of our mobility forum, and Lisa Trickett, Birmingham city councillor and vice chair of our mobility forum, met European commissioner for transport, Violeta Bulc, on 20 April. Together they discussed urban mobility, including the need for cities to retain the flexibility to adapt policies to their local contexts.

Urban dialogues: tackling unemployment in Europe’s cities

The first of a series of urban dialogues in our partnership with The Centre, Edelman Brussels' forum for debate, took place on 12 May. The event focused on 'tackling unemployment with Europe's cities' and follows the launch of our declaration on work on 26 February. The series will explore how to better tackle some of the EU's current challenges by joining up European and local solutions.

Cities protecting the rights of people with disabilities

We highlighted the key role that local authorities play in implementing the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities at a high level Latvian presidency event on disability in Riga on 11 May. João Carlos da Silva Alfonso, deputy mayor of Lisbon for social rights, represented EUROCITIES, emphasising the need for cooperation between different governance levels and recognition of the role of cities in building inclusive labour markets and ensuring the accessibility of urban environments.
