Cities essential for success of Social Investment Package

Our social affairs forum in Barcelona on 5-7 March included a political discussion on the local level implementation of the Social Investment Package (SIP). Some 15 city politicians were among the 120 participants at the forum. They confirmed the desire of cities to become more involved in the formulation, management and delivery of the SIP, and to establish a direct link between European cities and the Commission to better deliver priorities at local level.

155 cities apply for 2013-2014 Mayors Challenge

Responses to the second edition of the Bloomberg Philanthropies Mayors Challenge have exceeded the inaugural US edition. Some 155 cities in 28 countries applied for the competition, which recognises the most innovative solutions to pressing urban challenges. A total of €9 million is available in prize money for five cities. The shortlist is currently being drawn up and the 20 finalists will attend an ideas bootcamp in Brussels at the end of April.

European Lab Forum: European Culture Refresh!

We are a partner in this year's European Lab Forum in Lyon on 27-30 May. It connects people working across various fields to reform entrepreneurial models and culture policies in Europe. This year's forum focuses on 'revisiting cultural policies: a new leading generation for Europe'. The programme will include a panel during which vice mayors will exchange with young cultural professionals on innovative and dynamic approaches in the field of culture.

CASCADE: learning and networking

Our CASCADE project on local energy leadership connected over 200 experts and decision makers from 39 European cities as part of its year-long learning and networking programme, which concluded in February 2013. It included 22 peer-to-peer learning and networking activities, including work shadowing, study and mentoring visits, focusing on CASCADE's three thematic areas.

Edinburgh Outdoors – enjoying the city’s parks

Edinburgh Outdoors changes the way citizens and visitors enjoy the city's parks. It's a digital service, launched in February 2013, providing the latest information about the city's parks on a website, Twitter and Facebook pages, or directly to your smartphone. Users can contribute their own observations or photos, and can use the service to find out more about tree collections, local events, or to locate public facilities. The service is helping Edinburgh's citizens to get out and about and to get more involved in their communities.
