The European Commission has launched the competition to identify the winner of the European Green Capital 2022 title. Since the first European Green Capital was awarded in 2010, 12 cities have been awarded the title thus far.
The award has been developed to promote and reward efforts taken by European cities for their commitment to environmental, social and economic sustainability. Every applicant city will be evaluated based on their performance in twelve environmental areas including climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies and sustainable urban mobility.
The application form is the first step for cities to compete for the title. The European Green Capital Award is open to cities across Europe which have more than 100,000 inhabitants (see the eligibility criteria and competition information here). The winner of the prestigious European Green Capital 2022 title will receive a financial incentive of €350,000 to kick-start their environmental programme in 2022. Being a European Green Capital brings many other benefits including access to the exclusive European Green Capital Network of winners and finalists to share environmental knowledge and inspire other cities.
All interested parties are required to register to proceed to the application form and supporting documents by 14 October 2019.
