We respond to the European Commission's proposal for a cyber security directive and strategy
We recently published our response to the European Commission’s proposal for a directive on cyber security and a cyber security strategy. We welcome the call for developing member state cyber security strategies, public-private partnerships and the need for technological neutrality. However, we feel that the proposal requires further clarification and definition in relation to security requirements and reporting obligations.
The European Parliament is currently preparing its draft report. The rapporteur, Andreas Schwab MEP (EPP, DE) may include amendments in his draft report that will exempt public administrations from some of the main obligations of the proposed directive, which is primarily aimed at private companies.
The vote in the European Parliament’s internal market and consumer protection (IMCO) committee is expected in January 2014.
