‘Cities4Europe – Europe for citizens’: involve - inspire - impact

  • involve citizens in a dialogue about the future
  • inspire all levels of government to build societies where people come first
  • impact the way decisions are taken in Europe

It is time to change the way politics is done in Europe. A year ahead of the European Parliament elections, our campaign will bring people and policymakers together to explore new ways of involving citizens in the decision-making process.

With 45 days to go to the campaign’s kick-off, 60 European cities have already officially joined the #cities4europe campaign, showing cities’ commitment in involving citizens in a dialogue about our future.

‘Cities4Europe – Europe for citizens’ will begin in May 2018 with a series of local events showcasing successful local initiatives that engage citizens, present ideas for new forms of democracy and map out a positive, common future.

The campaign will come alive on 7 May 2018 with a simultaneous online flash-mob involving all participating cities, and a European launch event in Brussels, where we will welcome European, national and local political leaders, as well as renowned cultural personalities. A high-level public debate will take place at the BOZAR, with the following confirmed speakers:

  • Daniel Termont, president of EUROCITIES and mayor of Ghent
  • Philippe Close, mayor of Brussels
  • Ada Colau, mayor of Barcelona
  • Karmenu Vella, European commissioner for the environment
  • Saskia Sassen, sociologist and professor at the Columbia University
  • Philippe Van Leeuw, film-director (Insyriated)
  • Philippe Van Parijs, philosopher and economist, professor at the UCL

The debate will be followed by an artistic performance and cocktail reception with interventions by Bonom – the so-called Belgian Banksy – and Nayra Martin Reyes (EUtopia).

Furthermore, politicians from throughout the EUROCITIES network will take part in a political summit hosted by the mayor of Brussels, Philippe Close, at the city hall, where we will also welcome Luc Van den Brande (special adviser to President Juncker and author of the report ‘Reaching out to the EU citizens – a new opportunity’), Karl-Heinz Lambertz (president of the European Committee of the Regions) and Herman Van Rompuy (president emeritus of the European Council, and president of the European Policy Centre).

Throughout the campaign, policy makers and citizens will work together to imagine and create a better future for our continent. Citizens’ ideas on building a more sustainable and fair society, as well as cities’ recommendations on how to engage citizens in policymaking, will be collected both online and at the events. EUROCITIES will then present these ideas to local, national and European leaders at our annual conference on 28-30 November 2018 in Edinburgh.

Let’s make a difference together!
