The working group creative citizenship, chaired by Athens with Nantes as vice chair, was hosted on 5 and 6 October by the city council of Madrid It continued its exploration of successful practices aimed at connecting cities and its citizens, and at co-creating solutions to respond to local challenges.
The working group will play a crucial role in EUROCITIES’ democracy campaign, ‘Cities4Europe – Europe for citizens’.
The campaign ‘Cities4Europe - Europe for citizens’ will showcase successful local initiatives that engage citizens, present ideas for new forms of democracy and map out a positive, common future. By looking at answers together with its citizens, cities have the opportunity to show their commitment in co-creating societies where citizens come first, and where trust between citizens and public authorities is strengthened.
With a range of different initiatives taking place across Europe throughout May 2018, ‘Cities4Europe - Europe for citizens’ aims at inspiring cities and other levels of government, including the EU, to pursue mechanisms and tools to engage citizens in policy making, strengthening new forms of democracy across the EU and beyond.
At the meeting, participants had the opportunity to exchange ideas with representatives of Decide Madrid - a digital platform providing inhabitants with a mechanism for political participation -, Vivero de Iniciativas Ciudadana (VIC) - an open, collaborative platform promoting, analysing and supporting citizens’ initiatives – and CIVICS - a digital platform that collects ‘alternative’ projects from participating cities.
The next meeting of the WG will take place at the beginning of March 2018 in Nantes. More information about the exact dates will be communicated in the coming weeks.
