EUROCITIES project “Edge-of-Centre Transformation”, led by Oslo, teamed up with the URBACT network “Sub>urban. Reinventing the fringe”, led by Antwerp to share the experience of the participating cities in making fringe areas more sustainable and attractive. Envisaging an alternative to car-based suburbia by reducing urban fragmentation and making cities denser, they investigated how new planning practices, instruments and partnerships could help find more effective ways to integrate fringe areas in the urban fabric.

The two projects bring together urban planning practitioners from Amsterdam, Antwerp, Baia Mare, Barcelona Metropolitan Authority, Casoria, Düsseldorf, Gothenburg, Copenhagen, Nacka, Oslo, Solin and Stockholm with Brno, Oslo and Vienna contributing to both projects.

Hosting a joint event in Brussels, the two networks will share their insights on rolling out local action plans and will showcase successful pilot projects engaging local stakeholders in the redevelopment of urban fringe areas.

The conference targeting EU, national and local leaders and practitioners will include speeches from the vice mayors of Antwerp and Oslo and the Flemish chief architect followed by a debate conducted by URBACT lead experts.

The event will take place in the Norway House (Rue Archimède 17, 1000 Bruxelles) from 9.30 to 13.30 on Tuesday, 13 June.
