Miguel Arias Cañete, European commissioner for climate and energy, addresses European mayors in a letter that emphasises the crucial role of cities in successfully implementing the energy transition and preparing for the impacts of climate change.
Commissioner Cañete encourages cities to step up their ambitions and sign up to the (new) Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy. The Covenant, extended until 2030, now includes both climate change mitigation and adaptation commitments in line with a shared 2050 vision towards decarbonised and resilient territories with universal access to secure, clean and affordable energy.
