Our 2018 spring Social Affairs Forum meeting took place in Utrecht on 7-8 March 2018. The forum’s theme was: ‘Making the city together: co-creating city strategies to deliver the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at local level’.
The focus of the Forum meeting was on the role of cities in delivering the Sustainable Development Goals and Agenda 2030 at local level. Through a series of panel debates, workshops, site visits and speed-networking sessions, cities gained a better understanding of what these global goals mean and how they can be integrated in their city strategies for sustainable urban development. The meeting discussed how cities can work together with the European Commission towards the implementation of SDGs in the EU in view of achieving inclusive and sustainable development in Europe.
Participants discussed how to localise SDGs by putting in place participatory processes to involve all actors in the local communities so as to ensure ownership of the actions leading to reaching these ambitious goals. The event took stock of best practices to co-create city strategies on SDGs and how to finance their implementation. Cities were inspired to better connect social challenges, such as poverty and well-being, to economic development and environmental challenges. The event looked at how SDGs can inspire city authorities to work together with business, academia and citizens for a sustainable future for all.
